Slim Shaker Kitchen

|| Case Study — Residential ||

The Brief:

Transitional Shaker-inspired cabinets and drawers with 5/8" solid-oak borders.

The challenge here with such narrow mitred borders was to prevent warping and splitting from the constant changes in humidity in a kitchen. Rift-cut oak veneer called for a nuanced handling of the grain to bring out its beauty.

Of Note:

  • To ensure superior durability in the cabinet borders, we chose the traditional fine-cabinetry technique of inserting frame spleens. This stabilizes the mitred corners to prevent splitting in an environment where humidity varies constantly.

  • We finished the rift-cut oak veneer with Rubio Monocoat, a natural oil finish that has 0% VOC and provides exceptional durability for high-use surfaces. Its matte finish enhances the depth and warmth of the wood grain to beautiful effect.
